2003 Yamaha

The 2003 R1 is the last of the generation before the undertail model started in 2004.

It utilized a sophisticated vacuum-controlled fuel injection system. Unlike modern "ride-by-wire" bikes that can feel a bit disconnected, the 2003 R1 used constant velocity carb-style sliders in the throttle bodies.

The Result: It offered the reliability of fuel injection with the organic, "snappy" throttle response of old-school carburetors. It is widely considered one of the smoothest-fueling liter bikes ever made.

It retained a massive amount of mid-range grunt. You didn't have to scream the engine to 12,000 RPM to feel the power; it pulled like a freight train from anywhere in the rev range, making it a superior street bike compared to its more "track-focused" successors.

The 2002–2003 generation is often cited as the most "bulletproof" R1. It didn't suffer from the stator issues of the later 2004–2006 models or the "exup valve" headaches of the earlier versions. It was a bike built with incredible attention to detail, right before the era of heavy electronic rider aids and cost-cutting plastics.

The 2003 R1 is the "sweet spot" for many purists. It captures the raw, analog soul of the original 1998 beast but refines it with enough technology to make it reliable and easy to live with.

We have the books and both keys for this bike, the tyres are good and we have a few service receipts from Cullys up until 2018. The owner has looked after maintenance recently.
