2008 - The Time Machine
Initially called the ‘Bullet Classic’ but destined to quickly become known as simply the ‘Classic’, the motorcycle was launched in October 2008. In 2005, with stringent Euro 3 and Bharat Stage III emissions standards in view, Royal Enfield decided to modernize the erstwhile Bullet’s engine and at the same time re-evaluate the bike’s overall design to make it relevant for a new generation of riders.
The new engine was fundamental to the success of the updated Bullet. Created in collaboration with British engine specialists, Criterion Engineering and Ricardo, it had a unit-construction layout - its gearbox was integrated within the crankcase assembly. This immediately became known as the Royal Enfield UCE (for unit construction engine). The design included many advancements over the retiring pre-unit engine, including electronic fuel injection, a first for Royal Enfield, hydraulic valve lifters, trochoid oil pumps, a 7-plate wet clutch and an automatically tensioned primary chain.
The simple form of British single-cylinder motorcycles, especially those of the immediate post-war era, both progressive and relevant with the design, made the Classic - truly timeless and authentic.
The casquette headlight unit, a unique Royal Enfield feature, was retained, as were the basic dimensions of the chassis. The front and rear mudguards, fuel tank, oval tool box, speedometer, single sprung saddle, tail light assembly and exhaust system were all shaped to conform to period styling. However, up-to-date refinements, including a 28mm front disc brake, gas-filled shock absorbers and 18" wheels, were essential to enhance the ride experience.
In November 2009 the Classic went on sale in India in both 350 and 500cc configurations. Very soon, the demand rapidly outpaced supply of what had become an aspirational motorcycle globally.
Launched in seven gleaming colourways, across five new variants – Heritage (Madras Red and Jodhpur Blue), Heritage Premium (Medallion Bronze), Signals (Commando Sand), Dark (Gun Grey and Stealth Black) and Chrome (Emerald) – the 2025 Royal Enfield Classic 350 seamlessly integrates efficient feature upgrades like LED headlamps, LED pilot lamp, gear position indicator on cluster and type C USB charging point, while staying true to its signature aesthetic and character. Additionally, the top variants - Emerald and Dark series - will be offered with Tripper pod as standard fitments along with adjustable levers and LED trafficators.
The timeless, signature design of Classic coupled with perfectly-proportioned silhouette has undoubtedly been the most preferred Royal Enfield motorcycle among the Aussie customers. With its Unmatched design, unmistakable style. unrivalled craftsmanship and rare blend of character, the Classic truly stands out. Being a mix of modern engineering and traditional handcrafting, the Classic is a really practical everyday ride as well as for quick weekend getaways whether in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide or any of the cities in Australia.
